Chatter spread around the classroom.

“What did your okaa-san give you today?”
“Hey did you get that new video game?”
“What shall we cosplay as on Sunday?”

Whispers spread across the classmates.

“He has nothing again”
“Isn’t he a bit weird?”
“Maybe he’s a orphan?”
“I doubt it, you need to pay a lot to attend this school…”

Eyes shot at him from every direction.

“There’s got to be something wrong with him”
“No one’s ever properly spoken to him”
“Does he have any friends?”

And they all were against him…

“Why did my mother give me tomatos again, I hate them!”
“Why do you give them to Makoto? I bet he’ll eat anything?”

The school girl got up from her seat and over to the center of the classroom where Makoto sat insilence, fighting within himself.

I must calm my heart down. I must, was all that ran through his mind.

She placed the tomato sandwiche on the edge of his desk and skipped back to her friends. His head and eyes were down but he could feel everyone’s stares.

“Will he do it?”
Quickly he grabbed the sandwiche and ate it. Chuckles skattered across the classroom.
“How disgusting.”
“He just took it like it was life itself”
“He’ll eat anything”

He felt their stares, their dark voices, their laughter on the back of his neck, down his spine, all over his body. He hadn’t eaten since yesterday morning, how could he have? Father had punished him again. It was right that he went the night and morn with no food.

The laughter dispersed into silence. Makoto wondered why and slowly lifted his eyes but not his head. He heard footsteps coming close. Soon he saw the hem of a skirt and the screeching on a chair making it’s way to his desk. The skirt sat on the chair. He slowly lifted his head up…

A box landed itself on his desk and he fixed his eyes on it as he watched it being opened.
His mouth watered, his body shivered with excitement, but his mind was far from confused. Was this why everyone had been quite? Because of this skirt?

“Here, you can share with me…” said a voice slightly above him. He lifted his head fully and saw what owned the skirt.

It had long flowing black hair and deep brown eyes. It was a girl. She smiled at him. He was slightly disheartened. Was this another joke? He wondered. She put the lid of her bento infront of him and began to share out her food equally with him.

“Don’t listen to them… they have nothing better to do than to pick on those less fortunate. They ovbiously aren’t well educated enough even though they come from higher familes” a chair moved swiftly and a male voice came from it “What did you call us?” the girl stood up,

“I called you less educated than I and Makoto”

His heart pulled at his name being said, how did she know who he was? He’d never seen her before… she obviously wasn’t in his class.. maybe not even his year…

The boy moved to hit her. Makoto’s eyes moved swiftly and went to move to stop the boy attacking this girl but she moved too fast and the boy fell onto her chair and over it.
“This proves me point” she picked up her bento and lid and looked at Makoto “let’s go eat somewhere else shall we?” Makoto looked up at her shyly and lightly nodded.
The class watched in au as the two of them left, leaving the boy on the floor holding his mouth in pain.

On the rooftop

“Are you alright?” she asked Makoto. He flinched at the sudden break of silence. He was stood towards the edge as she sat on the stairs sorting out their food, “you can come and eat now. No one will bother us”

He turned and quickly walked towards her. He looked at her, mentally asking if it was okay. She smiled, like she’d read his mind. He took the food on the bento lid and ate it quickly. She chuckled slightly “You can have mine half if you want” he looked at her again, “I’m not hungry” she replied. He bowed his head before taking her half.

As he was eating she quietly studied his face and lifted up a hand and brushed his hair out of the way. He flinched at the sudden movement, causing the food to go everywhere and for his to retract into a featus position. She quickly moved back, “I’m sorry” she was worried for him.

He rocked back and forth for a few minutes as she sat there in silence watching him with pitiful eyes. When he’s calmed down he looked to the floor.

“May I?” she quietly asked. He made no movement of rejection so she slowly lifted her hand to his face once more. She brushed his hair out of the way and came close, studying his face again.

“You’re not bad looking” she said lightly. He looked up at her. She moved her hand from his hair to his cheek, “you’re cold too” his eyes opened widely and began to panic, “are you okay?” he nodded quickly and closed his eyes. Did she know? He thought immediately.

Moments passed and nothing was said and no one moved, not even her hand from his cheek.

“I’m Arisa” she said quietly, “I’m in the year below… is that weird to you?” he made no reply but took note of what she said “I’ve noticed you’re left out a lot. Maybe you should speak out. Although having said that, they look like the type of people who would’ve give you a second to speak out anyway,” she chuckled slightly,

“I’m here for you though. You don’t have to tell me who you are or your life story, just know that I’ll be here for you” her hand fell against his chin and neck.

His eyes widened. He could feel her pulse… her blood. Without thinking he took a hand to her neck and flung her forward, digging his teeth into her neck. He didn’t notice but she sat there and took it, only to tighten a hold around his arm when it was too much. Immediately he pushed her back and stared at her in horror. She put a hand around her neck and untied the scarf that was around her wrist and tied it around her neck, “I knew this would come in handy one day” she laughed. He sat there, frozen but puzzeled.

“Why aren’t you scared?” he eventually talked. She stood up and looking at him,
“I told you. I’m here for you” she replied.

The bell went. She picked up her bentou and looked at him one last time, “Don’t worry about him. I’m still here, alive, and so are you” she turned around and went down the stairs.
